Apple gets iPad shipping down to same day

Apple on Saturday quietly shortened the shipping times for new iPads on the Apple Store to 24 hours. Every model now ships within a day after it was ordered and follows just a few days after ship times shrank to a few days earlier the same week. It's unclear if Apple retail stock has caught up, but other international stores also show the reduced lead time.

The moment marks the first in the five months of iPad availability that Apple can reasonably expect to keep up with demand and supports notions that Apple has had to step up production to guarantee healthy supply. The popularity of the tablet has been enough that Apple reportedly sub-contracted Samsung to help make the 9.7-inch multi-touch displays after LG Display's factories weren't enough.

Apple won't reveal how many iPads it has shipped in the summer until its quarterly results arrive in October, but the same if unverified rumors could have Apple shipping as many as 7.5 million iPads in a quarter, or twice as much as what it delivered in the spring. Both Android and Windows tablets are expected to pale in comparison, as Samsung may make just 300,000 Galaxy Tabs a quarter while the combined Windows tablet PC market could reach just 1.25 million for the whole year.

    First it was 7-10 days.

Then it went to 3-5 days.

    Then 1-3 days.

    Now within 24 hours.

The reasoning is obvious. Apple is perfecting its iTime ordering process, where orders placed today are actually sent back in time to last week, where they are used to determine the proper capacity of manufacturing. Thus, they come off the assembly line just as the order is placed, because they actually received the order a week ago.

Either that or Apple's created a black hole nearby the manufacturing plants in China, thus causing time there to move slower than around the world. Thus they are able to spit more products out over the same course of 'Apple' time. But that just seems ridiculous.
