Intel buyout of Infineon wireless may wrap this weekend

updated 01:45 pm EDT, Fri August 27, 2010

Intel to complete Infineon wireless buyout soon?

A buyout of Infineon wireless by Intel that dates back nearly two months may finally come to an end this weekend, according to sources speaking to Reuters. What is still being negotiated is whether or not the whole unit will be sold or just a portion. The former could result in nearly $1.27 billion changing hands.

Infineon makes chips for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, which is were Intel has little to no presence. A purchase by Intel would buy the company between three and four years in research and development, IDC analyst Flint Pulskamp told the news outlet.

Broadcom and Samsung were also rumored to be in the running to buy Infineon, but their bids are said to have fallen by the wayside, with Intel emerging as the favorite. None of the companies allegedly involved in this deal made official announcements or comments.

Infineon's partial selloff could have a significant impact on companies like Apple, which uses Infineon cellular chipsets in the iPhone 3GS and iPad.
