Thieves smash into University Towne Apple Store [u]

updated 12:00 pm EDT, Fri August 27, 2010

Entry required slipping into mall first

(Updated with correct location description) The University Towne Center Apple Store in San Diego, California was hit by a robbery early Thursday morning, a local TV station reports. Around 4:20AM two men smashed through the glass front doors of the store, and proceeded to take a dozen iPhones out of a display case. Both men were wearing jeans and hoodies, say police, while one was carrying a red duffel bag.

The break-in was recorded on camera, but no suspects are reported to have been arrested so far. The Apple Store was also specifically targeted, which may raise a red flag for the company. It has, on the other hand, been subject to other narrowly-aimed burglaries in the past.

    UTC Mall

"An unusual aspect of the case is that the robbers would have to have slipped into the UTC mall first, suggesting problems with the building's overall security."

It's an outdoor mall... There's no building to break into.

    Remote wipe

Eventually the bad guys will learn that iPhones can be wiped remotely. Again and again.

    Or maybe they won't learn...

    Burlingame store, too

The Apple store in Burlingame, CA, had its front door smashed about 10 days ago. I don't know if it was part of a burglary attempt, but a security guard has been on duty in the store during the day and said the incident occurred in the middle of the night.

    what????

The Apple Store was also specifically targeted, which may raise a red flag for the company.

What do they mean "specifically targeted"? And what kind of red flag is this going to raise? "Hey, we've got to stop selling so much expensive stuff that people want. People are breaking in and stealing it! We need to switch to selling cheap c***. That way, we'll never be robbed again!"

It has, on the other hand, been subject to other narrowly-aimed burglaries in the past.

And so has my local 7-eleven. What's your point? Seriously folks. Robbers almost always are narrowly-minded. Very few go on a burglary spree in one night.

    Glass....

Maybe coat the storefronts in the iPhone 4's glass? :)
