Madrid, Barcelona Apple Stores get opening dates

updated 03:10 pm EDT, Thu August 26, 2010

Company spent 'years' looking for locations

Following a long wait, Apple has at last scheduled grand openings for the first two Apple Stores in Spain. Launching on September 4th at 10AM is the La Maquinista outlet, situated in Barcelona. Normal operating hours are scheduled for 10AM to 10PM Monday through Saturday.

The second store is opening in the Xanadù shopping mall in Madrid on September 11th, again at 10AM. Unlike La Maquinista, the Xanadù outlet will be open all week, albeit with the same running hours. Both stores already have workshops planned for the days following their debuts.

Apple's senior VP for retail, Ron Johnson, recently explained to a Spanish newspaper that the company had spent years looking for possible locations in the country. Only earlier in 2010 was a firm decision made, according to Johnson. Spain has treated Apple well in recent months; during the last quarter, local Mac sales were up 59 percent year-over-year.
