Verizon, Cisco hope to offer holographic TV in 10 years

Verizon, Cisco talk about holographic TV future

An interview with John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, revealed that he believes holographic TV sets are the next big technology. According to the CNET report, Chambers saw this technology arriving in about 10 years. Such technology would further enhance the viewing experience and bring medicine applications much easier to view, from all angles and in true 3D.

Over at Verizon, CIS Shaygan Kheradpir shared same opinion, but added that his company is already working with researchers to bring holographic technologies into homes and small businesses. No specifics were revealed, other than that the carrier is attempting to send a holographic image of someone's head across its FiOS fiber-optic network.

Doctors could use the technology to make a diagnosis of their patient from the comfort of their own home, for example.

Kheradpir said a fast connection, such as an evolution of Verizon's own 1Gbps FiOS fiber optic line, would be required to deliver holographic video content. And Kheradpir added holography is just the sort of technology needed to drive up demand for such high-speed services. Without the infrastructure, the holographic technology would be too expensive to implement.

He pointed to his company's own FiOS tier, with a 50Mbps service already available, but no demand for a 100Mbps tier that it could easily offer.

Holography uses several cameras to record an image and render it so it can change position and orientation like the real subject. The transmission of holograms has been demonstrated by Australia's Telstra. Cisco has also done holography demonstrations.
