DSLR extends features beyond flagship E-3

Olympus may be preparing to announce a new flagship DSLR, the E-5, at the Photokina expo next month in Germany. The camera will reportedly retain the 12-megapixel sensor of the current E-3, along with the 4/3 lens mount, an unnamed source has told 4/3 Rumors. Olympus reportedly designed the E-5 to compete directly with Nikon's D300s and Canon's 7D.

Other rumored features include a weather-sealed body, support for HD video recording, and a flip/swivel LCD display. A separate source suggests the camera will offer another important feature that hasn't been seen yet in a DSLR, although the source was unwilling to divulge details of the highlighted feature.

Photokina is scheduled for September 21 through 26. Additional information regarding the E-5, including pricing and a launch date, remains unclear.

The E-3 has a 10MP sensor. And Olympus are falling so far behind in sensor technology now, particularly in high-ISO noise and dynamic range, that they'll need to do something dramatic with the E-5 to even begin to retain the prosumer/semi-pro market. They've also completely failed to deliver on the early promise of 4/3 for more compact DSLRs so, apart from the truly excellent lenses (where APS-C cameras are now catching up) it's hard to see why anyone would now move to Olympus from another brand (and I write as someone whose had Olympus's top-end DSLRs from the very beginning of 4/3)
