Samsung teases Galaxy Tab for US launch

updated 12:15 pm EDT, Tue August 24, 2010

Samsung Galaxy Tab confirmed for September 2

Samsung today posted a teaser site and video (below) for the Galaxy Tab. The clip doesn't provide more than was already known but confirms the front camera for "video calling," 720p playback and Android 2.2 out of the box. Other brief teases clearly show the Swype keyboard as well as make references to e-reading and GPS mapping.

A formal launch is now penned in for September 2, just ahead of the IFA show in Berlin.

The device is now expected to have a seven-inch, 1024x600 display, carry both front and back cameras, and hold 16GB of internal storage. Questions exist over whether Samsung will try to adapt its TouchWiz interface for the larger screen, although shots from earlier today show a hybrid between stock Android and cosmetic features borrowed from the iPad.

The company has strongly hinted at a US launch and, combined with our sighting in Australia, is now believed to be planning the same kind of worldwide launch that it had for the Galaxy S in a bid to thwart Apple before it cements its control of tablets with the iPad. Samsung came earlier to the tablet-like category with its Q1 UMPC, but it flopped out in the home and had little more than a niche impact on business as the Windows tablets had neither the touch-friendly interface nor the battery life that have given Apple its early success in the category.

Glad I sold my iPad. Apple, I know you'll match this, but you better do it fast, or I be buying this baby...
