Virgin Mobile confirms $40 unlimited data plan

updated 07:55 am EDT, Tue August 24, 2010

No contract, unlimited data en route

Confirming an earlier leak, Virgin Mobile has revamped its Broadband2Go data plans and now offers a true $40 unlimited data service. Replacing the earlier four tier arrangement, the simplified two tier pricing structure also includes a $10 option for 100 MB that gives casual users up to 10 days of access when needed. Available for use online from tomorrow, the development is likely to increase competition in the mobile broadband space.

Like the $10 deal, the $40 option is also contract free, but gives users unlimited mobile broadband access for 30 days at a time. Users can top up their access at the end of the month, or pay for another 30 days of unlimited access only when they next need it.

The Virgin Mobile service operates on the Sprint network, which Virgin Mobile customers can access by purchasing either the $80 Ovation MC760 USB modem or the Novatel Mi-Fi 2200 Wi-Fi hotspot router for $150.

Sprint as well as AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all have caps of 5GB or less for Internet-only plans. Frequent travelers have often complained regarding the limits as they can be broken quickly with significant media streaming or for more than a few days of use. With the new unlimited plan, customers could have a true substitute for a home connection and would have a particular edge with a MiFi, since multiple users could share service without risking overage fees using any Wi-Fi enabled device.
