Motorola Kobe seen bringing Droid X UI to AT&T

updated 05:05 pm EDT, Mon August 23, 2010

Moto MB520 Kobe surfaces online

A key scoop this weekend has given away the existence of a mid-range Motorola Android phone destined for AT&T. The MB520, nicknamed the Kobe, was seen by Engadget in listings both at the UPnP Forum and Wi-Fi Alliance. While the official posts only acknowledge that it has 802.11n Wi-Fi and DLNA media sharing, a "trusted" source expects it to have a minimalist Blur interface like the Droid X on top of Android 2.1.

It also supports AT&T's native 3G bands and will probably be the first contemporary Motorola Android phone on the network since the Backflip arrived at the start of the year.

The touch-only phone should have the same, modern PowerVR SGX 530 graphics as the Droid X and Droid 2, as well as their 854x480 resolution, but with a TI OMAP processor clocked down to 800MHz from 1GHz and a 3.5-inch display instead of the 4.3- and 3.7-inch respective LCDs on the earlier phones. Just a three-megapixel camera without a flash would be available for photos, but it would have both an internal 2GB of memory as well as a 2GB bundled microSD card.

Performance of the phone would accordingly sit behind the Droid X but ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S.

To date, no launch details have escaped for the Kobe, but the official approvals and leaked benchmarking hint that Motorola's phone should be ready before the end of the year.
