First dual-core Atom N550 netbooks start shipping

Intel delivers first true dual-core Atom netbooks

Intel today sent word that the first netbooks based on its dual-core Atom N550 have started shipping. Systems like Acer's Aspire One D255 as well as unnamed models from ASUS, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, MSI, Samsung and Toshiba should provide the extra speed. Intel pitches the chips as ideal for Flash video and other media where a single-core chip might struggle.

The N550 clocks in lower than most Atom chips, at 1.5GHz, but has twice as much cache and consumes roughly the same amount of power as a single-core version. Intel gives the new model the same DDR3 memory support as the newer single-core N455 and N475.

Many if not all of the PC builders involved should detail their netbooks soon.
