Google sells out of developer Nexus Ones

updated 10:20 am EDT, Fri August 20, 2010

Google Nexus One dev version still in demand

Google late Thursday admitted that it had already sold out of the early supplies of the developer-only Nexus One. The search firm cleared its first shipment in "almost no time" and now can't sell any more until HTC ships further stock. Company evangelist Tim Bray didn't have an estimated time for a return to supply.

"We think it's a good development platform and a nice phone," Bray said. "Apparently, you agree. Somewhat too many of you, in fact."

Most of the blame is pinned on the shortage in AMOLED displays that has affected shipments of most HTC smartphones. The stall has caused enough problems to force a complete switch to Sony LCDs for phones like the Desire, although it's not known if the Nexus One will make a switch itself.

The Nexus One was first sold to the general public, but a lack of advertising and a presence at physical stores led Google to limit sales to developers.
