Yahoo Mail gains iPad-formatted HTML5 interface

Resembles MobileMe Mail interface

Yahoo has deployed a new web interface for its Mail service, custom-tailored to the iPad. The page is based on the same HTML5 front-end developed for the iPhone, but with a reorganized layout better suited to a larger screen. Twin panes can be used to display messages and their contents, and photo attachments can be viewed either as previews or in full size. Search options now include full search, personal folders and smart folders for important contacts.

Particularly important for Wi-Fi iPad owners may be offline caching, which allows searching and reading through messages without a connection. The interface somewhat resembles Apple's latest MobileMe Mail front-end, which in turn borrows design cues from the native Mail app on the iPad. The Yahoo layout could be considered superfluous, as a Yahoo account is one of the default configuration options for an iPad.
