Nook for iPhone appears with iPad update

Barnes & Noble ramped up its e-reading efforts today by launching Nook for iPhone (free, App Store). The rework of its mobile app is more customizable and lets users customize the background, font and link colors using a full color palette. Alignment, brightness and font style can be tuned as well.

iPhone 4 users get an extra perk as non-scalable art, such as book covers, will now take advantage of the screen's higher pixel density. All users get the same bookmarking, highlighting, note taking and two-week LendMe book borrowing as on apps for the iPad and other platforms.

The iPad app (free, App Store) has also been given the Nook label and now has what's billed as a first-ever rating feature. The five-star system lets readers prioritize books based on their favorites. Some speed improvements also come with the new feature.

A native Windows app has also been rebadged as Nook for PC. Barnes & Noble promises a future Nook for Mac app in the future.
