Verizon FiOS Simulcrypt to be incompatible with CableCARD

updated 10:20 pm EDT, Tue August 17, 2010

Firmware updates seen as unlikely

Verizon's FiOS TV network is preparing for a transition to Simulcrypt technology, which will cause problems for many CableCARD owners. The conversion is said to be necessary for compatibility with certain Cisco and Motorola devices that require the encryption standard.

Although companies such as TiVo have already released firmware updates to ensure compatibility with their devices, manufacturers of CableCARD components are unlikely to follow the same route.

Verizon expects to enable Simulcrypt transmission on or after September 15. [via Engadget]
