UK's ITV said to be 'furious' over Apple iTV rumors

updated 09:40 am EDT, Fri August 13, 2010

Lawsuit threatened if iTV name is real

Executives at ITV, one of the UK's major TV networks, are said to be "furious" over rumors that the Apple TV is being renamed the iTV. Even though the rumors are not yet confirmed, The Mirror claims that ITV executives are already meeting with lawyers to plan legal action. ITV has a trademark on its name within Great Britain.

The Mirror cites a channel insider, who claims that ITV is considering whether a global ban is possible. "You only have to look at recent problems with the iPhone 4 to see not everything Apple produces is gold dust. We all take our ITV brand very seriously and we'll do everything in our power to protect it," the person is quoted as saying.

The iTV is believed to be a $99 iPhone-sized device, with 16GB of flash storage and some form of iOS preloaded. It may support apps, and be largely dependent on a rumored iTunes streaming service. The service may primarily stream video during 2010, including little music support.

    Blimey!

This could turn out to be one very expensive hobby for Apple.

    Hey, dudes!

How about calming down, since it was just a lousy rumor.

Do you really think Apple is that full of themselves that they could just use your trademarked name and bully you out of it?

And I have no idea why Apple would even choose it as a name. h***, they have such a device as it is, it's called the iPod!

    no big deal

ITV isn't a global brand. Apple may be forced into calling it something else in the UK (maybe). So what?

    Not a chance

This RUMOUR has no legs. Apple does not need another legal headache. Picking a fight with someone with pockets as deep as ITV would be stupid, and Apple is not stupid. There's also this thing called the Commonwealth. If ITV got protection in Great Britain I suspect there would be moves in the commonwealth nations, to follow suit. That would leave Apple with the device called one thing in the US and a few other places, and another in much of the rest of the world. They ain't going to do that.

The ITV part of this rumour was the one big item I dismissed as soon as I read it. It's just not going to happen.

    haha!

    '"furious" over rumors'
Send a letter to Apple stating the probability of legal action if the name is infringed.
    Done.

"You only have to look at recent problems with the iPhone..."
I'm certain that every ITV show/segment/broadcast is gold dust as well?

    ATV with Flash memory???

    Come on!
If that happens, it's gonna flop! Who in the world is gonna stream media from a server in the US??? Not anyone in outside USA at least!
And 16G for movies? So you can store 1-3 HD movies on it.. give me a break!

It would make sense to move Apple TV to iOS, but not Flash memory.

    iTV

I thought the original "i" thing all started from Apple.... like iMac. Anyone with iSomething is actually being sued by Apple. Oh well, iGiveup.

Really?? Well I just have to say that I'm "furious" about the dude who said armageddon is coming in 2012...

I thought highly educated people can tell the difference between truth vs rumor...
