Cox VOD to reach TiVo Premiere boxes

updated 01:05 pm EDT, Thu August 12, 2010

TiVo Premiere to let users access Cox VOD content

DVR maker TiVo has partnered with cable provider Cox to make the latter's on-demand content accessible on its latest set-top box, the TiVo Premiere. TiVo users will now have the ability to use TiVo's interface and search function to view Cox content and other, regular programming, though details of how it's done are not clear.

This will work with all current and future TiVo Premieres, which went on the market in March and start at $300. This will be relegated to major Cox markets such as Las Vegas and San Diego, among others, and is due to go live early in 2011. As part of the deal, Cox will market the TiVo set-top by offering free installation for subscribers who buy a TiVo online and will promote the DVR on its website.

Currently, on-demand content from cable companies usually requires the use of their own set-top boxes and has been a frequent source of frustration for TiVo. It often has to compete against carrier-supplied DVRs with less features but which are often cheap or free with a subscription.
