Service still awaits launch details
iOS developers should now be able to create metadata for Game Center leaderboards and achievements, according to a new Apple notice. The data must be entered through iTunes Connect, after which it can be tested in a closed environment. Achievements are essentially in-game feats, such as killing a certain number of a particular enemy, or discovering a new part of the map.
The Game Center service, largely structured like Microsoft's Xbox Live, has yet to get a formal launch date despite being announced in April. More details could potentially be revealed at a mid-September iPod event. One aspect to be settled is iPad support, as Apple has yet to roll out the iOS 4 update that should be needed for Game Center.
