Motorola Droid gets Android 2.2 update, Droid 2 on sale

Moto Droid Android 2.2 arrives

Motorola early today began its widescale rollout of the promised over-the-air Android 2.2 update for the Droid. The update will conspicuously omit the mobile hotspot feature of the Droid X and Droid 2 but will give most of the other features to Verizon users. It's unknown when users of the virtually identical Milestone will get the update themselves.

For all users, 2.2 is a significant speed boost in both the overall OS as well as the camera app and web browser. It supports Flash 10.1 as well as the option of moving apps to or from the SD card and voice dialing over Bluetooth. Some of its features are preparations for new services, such as "intents" to push commands from the web to the phone.

Simultaneously, Verizon has also acted on its vow to start selling the Droid 2 today. The spiritual successor to the Droid already has Android 2.2 built-in and supports mobile hotspot sharing along with the upgrade to a 1GHz processor and a wider keyboard. It costs $200 on a smartphone contract and an extra $20 per month for hotspot sharing with a 2GB cap.
