Google raided in South Korea over Street View data

updated 08:15 am EDT, Tue August 10, 2010

Korea concerned Google Street View a violation

Google's Seoul office has been subjected to a police raid by South Korean authorities. The latest concerns again center around Google's unintentional data collection during its Street View mapping its and storage practices for potentially sensitive personal information. Officials were worried that Street View, which has yet to officially launch in the country, might collect information from viewers.

In other instances, Google has claimed that the personal information it has gleaned from unsecured home and business Wi-Fi networks had been mistakenly obtained through code it didn't realize was present. Google has previously asserted that any information inadvertently recorded was fragmented and couldn't be used to breach people's security.

The incident is the latest in a string of privacy related issues that have plagued the tech giant in recent times. The South Korean government now joins US authorities and authorities from around the world including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Hong Kong and Australia in initiating investigations into Google's information gathering practices.
