Dell Streak to ship Friday for $300 with AT&T, $550 without

Dell Streak tablet finally shipping

Dell today finally outlined plans to ship its first pure touch tablet, the Streak. Following pre-orders, the company is shipping the Android tablet on Friday the 13th for $300 with a two-year AT&T data plan or $550 as an unlocked device. Those who pre-ordered beforehand will have the option of finishing the order a day earlier and will get both the promised free second-day shipping and a Plantronics Bluetooth headset.

The Android device is considered a crossover and can work both as an extra-large phone and as a data-only tablet. It has just a five-inch, 800x480 display, but it also fits both front (VGA) and back (five-megapixel) video cameras and has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. It faces an uphill struggle in competition with both other Android devices as well as tablets the iPad, as it still runs Android 1.6 and carries just 2GB of built-in storage. Pricing is also a factor as it costs more than almost all smartphones on contract but is less than $100 away from its much larger Apple 3G counterpart with more space. An update to Android 2.2 or 2.1 that may add 720p video recording.

The Streak has had one of Dell's longest-lasting appearances in the public eye before a launch. We were shown the device as far back as CES with specs having remained virtually unchanged since then. Delays in getting it to production may have dampened expectations as Apple both announced, shipped, and achieved record sales for the iPad in between CES and the Streak's ship date over seven months later.

    Friday the 13th? Really?

Dude, you're getting a Dell on the 13th? Good-luck with that!

I guess the only thing they can use as a selling point is 'It's cheaper than an iPad'

It's products like this that make you realize how different Apple really is from the rest of the world.

    But I have to admit...

I'm very curious about how it's going to sell. I'm very surprised it's not cheaper. I guess Apple really priced the iPad well if this thing is $550 off the shelf and without a contract. Lord knows what the first Windows Slates are going to go for.

    I don't know, but

it seems like the larger-than-iPhone screen and the ability to use it as a phone makes it a nice option over the iPad, too.

If the build quality is okay, it might work well for some folks. Good luck on this, Dell. It's decidedly not the same product as the two mentioned markets.

I really love the extra large phones

larger phones come closer, to doubling as a tablet, and I hate to have both a tablet and a phone. But with only android 1.6, and the screen being somewhat low resolution for its size, kind of takes the shine off it.

I'd like to see a commitment to upgrade to 2.2 android, and at least by convinced by using it, that the screen resolution is sufficient.

    Even more fragmentation

Good luck, all you Fragdroid programmers, as you try to cherry pick which Fragdroid device to write apps for. Different screen sizes and resolutions, plus the drastically small number of countries actually allowed to sell apps for money mean you'll be juggling lots of factors. Here's a chart to help you:

Seriously. Without a robust app store, the Streak is just a toy. Yet another iPad wannabe.

    a big phone

after all the complaining about the iPad being nothing more than a large iPhone, which it really is not, now we see something from a "competitor" (I use this term loosely) which really is just a bigger type of iPhone, and hardly comparable to an iPad. Anyone want to hold a brick up to their ear (see phone in coming wall Street Part 2 movie).

I have no doubt some will buy this, I do have doubts that at THAT price, people will prefer an iPad to this mobile screen saver.

Oh Yes Dell Calls It The Streak!

I hollered "Don't buy it, Ethel!"
    But it was too late.
    She'd already done activated.
    Locked it up.
Right there in front of the Geek Squad.

Oh yes Dell calls it the streak!
    Boogitay, boogitay.
    Lame-a** thing with a reek,
    Boogitay, boogitay.
    Dell thinks they're pretty bad,
    And will outsell the iPad,
When it hits its sales peak.

Oh yes Dell calls it the streak!
    Boogitay, boogitay.
    It'll make Mike D freak,
    Boogitay, boogitay.
So lucky he will have been,
If this thing outsells the Kin,
    Gonna give it a week.

Oh yes Dell calls it the streak!
    Boogitay, boogitay ...
Ethel! You get your money back right now!
    Stop calling it "Mr. Data!"
No, it's not a real android!
I know it says "Android" on the box.
    No, they didn't shrink him!
No, he's not inside of it!
