WD intros entry-level Elements Play media hub

updated 09:35 am EDT, Mon August 9, 2010

WD Elements Play comes in 1 or 2 TB HDD

Western Digital dipped into the starter range of media hubs today with the WD Elements Play. It varies from from the Media Player series, including the WD TV Plus, in several key ways such as the onboard storage capacity. The WD Elements Play also strips out some features such as Netflix streaming and networking.

The Elements Play's key advantage over rivals is out-of-the-box support for a range of files types including AAC, MP3, JPEG, Real Media, H.264, and MKV among others. Unlike the driveless or drive-optional devices from WD and elsewhere, he new product line leverages WD's experience in building hard disk drives, and comes in 1TB or 2TB capacities.

The price is yet to be confirmed, but unofficial estimates have it cost around $200.
