Apple starts taking orders for 12-core Mac Pro

updated 07:25 am EDT, Mon August 9, 2010

Mac Pro goes on sale with 5870 as stand-alone

As expected, Apple today started taking orders for the new Mac Pro. The new systems are now known to include three configurations and include not just the 2.8GHz quad-core and 2.4GHz eight-core systems but a third 12-core, 2.66GHz model. It comes outfitted with the same 6GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive and Radeon HD 5770 video but, due to the cost of the more exotic Xeons, starts at $4,999.

Build-to-order options depend on the system. On the single-processor system, the maximum choice is a 3.33GHz six-core Xeon, up to 16GB of RAM, and either a 2TB hard disk or a 512GB SSD in each bay. Only the Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5870 are options, but two 5770s can be installed in one system for dual displays at full speed.

As part of the rollout, Apple has also posted a Radeon HD 5870 upgrade card for Mac Pros. The board gives either the new Mac Pros or early 2009 models added speed or a second display without sacrificing video speed. It carries a slight premium over Windows-only cards at $449 but includes both dual Mini DisplayPort outputs and a dual-link DVI connection.

    As "suspected?"

    Expected, perhaps?

    Re: As "suspected?"

Police were called to a small derelict bungalow where an 8 core and a 12 core were believed to have co-habitated. The 12 core was escorted from the premises without issue, though neighbours reported earlier hearing 'Nya-nyah-nya-nya-nyah" many times.

The 12 Core Mac Pro is suspected of indulging in a 3-day party binge that included illicit substances, celebrity-studded clubs, and a trip to Tijuana. While 12 Core's agent refused to confirm or deny this report, revealing pictures of the Mac Pro's exiting a limousine surfaced on the website TMZ and imply less than sober behavior.

    Case Design

Jesus... couldn't they have at least refreshed the outer appearance of the casing? I know it's a minor detail, but that's all the more reason to just do something about it! This is their flagship computer, and it's looked the same since the G5 days more than 5 years ago!!!

    No 8-cores?

I guess the 8-core Xeons are too slow?

    Re: case design

You must be new to the world of mac. The organic spacy design that was the blue and white powermac G3 case was introduced january 99 and only in mid 2004 was the current layout adopted, before that it was variations of grey platinum & beige. This design is sound, it allows maximum ventilation, and a very flexible internal layout, as well as the layout on the back for fans ports card slots etc, and on the front you got easy access ports.

Why change it if it works?
