Toshiba's dual-screen Libretto W100 due August 11

Toshiba on Friday said it would launch its twin-screen Libretto W100 Windows 7-powered tablet PC on August 11. The final prices haven't been announced, but it will cost $1,099 when it reaches the US. It remains a special edition and may sell quickly.

The device depends on two 7-inch, 1024x688 multi-touch screens that change functions based on the role. When the tablet is open like a regular notebook, its bottom screen can act as a virtual keyboard with haptic feedback; the top screen acts like a traditional screen. Other contexts can bring up Toshiba's custom UI or turn both screens into full displays.

An accelerometer is built-in, letting users read e-book or online newspapers in a portrait mode like a traditional book. The W100 is powered by an ultra-low voltage 1.2GHz Pentium US400 processor and gets 2GB of RAM. A solid state drive gives it 62GB of storage, while an eight-cell battery powers it. A microSDHC card slot and a single USB port constitute its main expansion, but a webcam and Bluetooth give it extra room. [via Impress]
