Archos 8 32GB shows up briefly on store site

The first of the promised Android-powered portable media players from Archos has surfaced, if only for a brief moment, on online retailer J&R. The Generation 8 device is called the Archos 32 8GB, and sports a 3.2-inch screen with a 400x240 resolution. The newer device will otherwise get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an accelerometer and a built-in camera with a microphone.

There is unconfirmed talk of processing power coming from an 800MHz ARM Cortex A8, helping the device play back videos of up to 720p resolution in MPEG-4 and H.264 formats. It's also said to have comprehensive video and audio file support, with more formats supported than not. While the camera's megapixel count isn't known, it will support recording 640x480 (VGA) resolution MPEG-4 videos.

The Archos 32 8GB is expected to ship either in September or October, priced at $150, as revealed by the pulled J&R listing. A cost of the sort would be significantly lower than an iPod touch with the same 8GB capacity.

This is only one of a number of expected Android devices from Archos, as the company has promised at least six in total, all with various screen sizes. [via ArchosFans]
