Logitech intros Alert video security systems

Logitech is getting into digital video security systems, as it has introduced two such systems, the Alert 750i Master System and the weatherproof and night-vision capable Alert 750e Outdoor Master System. Each includes one HD camera, software and the ability to view the feed from any browser on a Mac or PC, or on their smartphones. The company will offer a premium Web and Mobile Commander service that will let user watch video that is recorded and stored on the camera and manage settings from the web or their smartphones.

The service will also be available on TVs later this year, through the Revue with Google set top box. Either system is said to be simple to set up, and uses HomePlug AV networking to transfer content, which involves simply hooking it up to the power socket. Users also need to install the included software and connect the cameras to their home networks.

The systems can record 960x720, 15FPS video and can be set to record manually or when motion is detected. Alerts can also be sent to users via e-mail when motion is detected on or inside their property. Both sport a built-in microphone, but only the outdoor camera has night-vision. The software lets users pick 16 motion zones, focusing on some areas and ignoring others to reduce false recordings. The cameras include 2GB microSD cards for storing videos. This video can be automatically backed up to a network-connected PC.

The cameras have a 130-degree wide-angle lens. Free apps are available to watch the feeds for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android users.

The Alert 750i Master System and the Alert 750e Outdoor Master System will arrive later in August, priced at $300 and $350, respectively. Add-on cameras are available with the Alert 700i Add-On Camera and the Alert 700e Outdoor Add-On Camera will be available for $230 and $280, respectively. The Alert Web and Mobile Commander service will cost $80 per year but comes with a free seven-day trial.
