Gorilla glass to reach shatter-resistant TVs next year

Gorilla glass to be used in shatter-resistant TVs

Corning's super-strong Gorilla glass, used thus far in cellphones that include the Droid and is rumored to be part of the iPhone 4, may soon be used in the production of high-end HDTVs and touchscreen tablets. According to reports, the company expects this to result in bezel-free TVs, with the glass itself protecting the display. Corning is currently in talks with Asian TV makers to bring its product to their TVs early in 2011.

The first deal should be completed in the fall. Production at Corning's Harrodsburg, KY plant is at full capacity, and the company is converting part of a second factory in Shizuoka, Japan to meet the expected demand.

The glass is claimed to be two to three times stronger than ordinary chemically-treated soda-lime glass, while being half as thick at the same time. This strength means Gorilla glass can be thinner than about 1.4mm, or about the thickness of a dime. The glass will be more expensive than alternatives, but at the same time thinner, lighter and less prone to scratches. At least one analyst believes it will add between $30 and $60 to the price of an HDTV set.

    Gorilla Glass

It's worked out so well for the new iPhones why not put it in the living room, I'm sure it will add nothing to the cost of already overpriced sets.
