FCC approves Samsung R900 as first LTE phone

updated 02:00 pm EDT, Fri July 30, 2010

LTE-ready Samsung R900 approved by FCC

The first phone using LTE for 4G, the Samsung R900, has now gone through FCC testing. It has been cleared for use in the US and is now known to support the 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands, which are used by the carrier in parts of the US for the R900's primary carrier, Metro PCS. Not much is known about the handset's specs other than that it will have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

MetroPCS said it will launch the device in limited markets at the end of this summer.

LTE is a 4G technology, but is theoretically much faster than WiMAX with 100Mbps peak speeds compared to about 10Mbps. Actual speeds are expected to fall in the range of 5-12Mbps downstream, or about twice as quick as existing 3-6Mbps speeds for Sprint's WiMAX network. [via PhoneScoop]
