HomePlug reveals specs of AV2 powerline spec

The HomePlug Powerline Alliance on Thursday explained advancements to its HomePlug AV2 specification for networking. The alliance's Technical Working Group has brought MIMO technology to the Powerline systems for faster speeds and range, increased Medium Access Control (MAC) efficiency and promised to increase operating spectrum. AV2 can further extend coverage by repeating and routing technology in networks of three or more nodes.

These changes should let the AV2 spec bring a five-fold boost in performance compared to current HomePlug AV products. It's fully compatible with both current HomePlug AV and future HomePlug Green PGY and IEEE products.

Powerline networking is currently used by broadband providers between modems and set-top boxes to reduce expenses and support costs in packages that include voice, TV and Internet services. The systems can stream 1080p HD video, broadband Internet, Internet gaming and security camera video over existing electrical wiring.

HomePlug plans to have the final AV2 spec ready by April of 2011. Powerline networking involves carrying data on a conductor that is shared to send electricity at the same time.

    great device!

These are really great tools you can use to extend the WiFi network you have in your house, specially to those devices which really don't have WiFi capabilities. If you're looking for an alternative though, I recommend the Netgear Universal WiFi Internet Adapter. This WiFi adapter is compatible with most internet-ready devices such as TVs, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and more. You can also use it to connect notebooks, wireless printers, and other networked home theater devices. For more information about the Netgear Universal WiFi Internet Adapter, visit and discover this wonderful device from Netgear. Enjoy!
