Retrospect 8.2 adds 64-bit addressing, 6.x compatibility

updated 11:15 am EDT, Tue July 27, 2010

Software's first Roxio edition

Roxio has released Retrospect 8.2, the first version of the software under its new owner. The title was previously under the control of EMC. The software handles backup and recovery tasks at a broad level, supporting everything from individual computers through to server- and tape-based backups. Multiple operations can be underway simultaneously.

The v8.2 update makes several changes, most notably improving network backup speed by as much as three times. 64-bit addressing has also been implemented, which should make it possible to handle volumes with "tens of millions" of files, according to Roxio. The user interface has been streamlined, and the app is now backwards compatible with v6.x archives.

Prices for Retrospect vary based on use. A three-user desktop edition starts at $129. Server editions cost at least $479, but can run as much as $1,669 for one with a support plan and unlimited client licenses. The Retrospect engine requires at least Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2GB of RAM, 10GB of hard drive space and dual G4 processors.
