Apple begins iPhone 4 case giveaway

updated 09:45 am EDT, Fri July 23, 2010

Uses iPhone app to identify eligibility

As promised at last week's press conference, Apple has rolled out the case giveaway program for iPhone 4 owners. The company has taken the unusual step of using a free iPhone app to handle the process. The software checks Apple IDs, IMEIs and serial numbers to judge eligibility; if a person is cleared, they can then choose to receive one of Apple's bumper cases, or else a third-party model.

Apple notes that if a phone was bought before July 23rd, people can only apply for a case through August 22nd. All other customers have 30 days after purchase, with the last eligible purchase date being September 30th. People who have already bought bumper cases should, in most cases, be getting automatic refunds, whether through a credit card payback or a new online store gift card.

If a bumper was bought in person at an Apple Store via cash, check or gift card, they must go back with a receipt to make a claim. The situation is more complex if a phone was bought through an AT&T outlet, as people must fill out a rebate coupon and mail it in.

The app is notably not available in countries like Canada, where the iPhone 4 has yet to go on sale.

    3-5 week wait

Frustrating that it should take that long to receive the 'free' gift from Apple. Also, only the abstract black is available. Was hoping for a different color bumper case.

    Still original iPhone

And I'm not upgrading until I see the all clear on the antenna (no bumpers or cases to make it work) or I go Verizon.

    Surprised

Is anyone surprised that it was going to be a 3-5 week wait? I guessed 6 weeks but close enough.... I picked the Incase Smoke b/c it looked the nicest, one extra case to have on hand.

I picked up my iP4 yesterday and have been using it commando style without a problem. I'm still kinda shocked that this antenna thing got so many ppl riled up.

    That should shut everyone up

There you go, free cases and now that you have to wait you still moan.
bottom line, this should shut you up and if it doesn't, just return the phone - truly simple.

Honestly it's as though people just want sh*T for free. I don't see my friend who has an HTC phone asking for a refund and he's dropping calls whilst my iPhone4 isn't in the EXACT same location.

    'Entitlement Generation' still upset

Your iPhone 4's fine; it's your brain that's getting poor reception. No wonder Obama got elected: Far too many people want something for nothing; even then, they're upset if it's not the right color, or takes too long to reach them. Here's a clue: Your parents lied to you. You are not special.

I'm still on my original iPhone also

Having bridgeable exposed metallic antennas is a design flaw. Jobs says Apple is an engineering company? We engineers have a word for this sort of thing: ITS A BUG. Their band-aid is to give you all cases and deny deflect and distort. If the iPhone 4 doesn't have a problem, why are they giving out free cases? Show me another cell phone where you can drop from 4 to 1 bars just by touching the outside with something conductive...
