Fujifilm intros cameras with new-gen EXR sensor

Fujifilm took its turn at pre-Photokina unveilings with new cameras highlighted by two high-end models. The FinePix F300EXR is one of the first cameras to use a second-generation EXR sensor that adds phase detection into the sensor itself; it can use phase detection autofocus to capture bright subjects but switch to contrast autofocus in the dark; it can lock in as quickly as 0.16 seconds. A gyroscopic sensor also improves the practical sensitivity as it can better compensate for sudden or dramatic movements and lower the ISO needed to get a stable shot.

The camera has one of Fujifilm's most densely packed lenses, with 15X 24-360mm optics. Video now shoots in 720p with HDMI out, and a three-inch LCD has particularly high contrast for both outdoor visibility and better tolerance of off-angle viewing. Motion panorama capturing, multi-shot pro focus and other software features from recent Fujifilm cameras carry over.

The F300EXR is due to arrive in late August for $330.

Among ultrazooms, the S2800HD is billed as the smallest camera with an 18X zoom and shoots at the equivalent of 28-504mm. Still photos capture at 14 megapixels, and video at 720p; it has the combination of both a three-inch, high contrast LCD as well as an electronic viewfinder. Tracking autofocus and other features carry over from other models.

The S2800HD arrives somewhat later, in early September, but will cost $260.
