Dell offers 32GB of RAM in flagship notebook

PC maker Dell has upgraded its 17-inch Precision M6500 notebook to support as much as 32GB of RAM. Dell achieves this using four DIMM slots, with each packing an 8GB stick. The amount doubles its previous best and is much more suited to workstation-level tasks such as 3D modeling or simulations, many of which normally need a desktop.

Dell is quick to point out that the new M6500 is the first notebook that offers the combination of a Core i7 Extreme Edition processor and NVIDIA's Quadro FX 3800M graphics with the added memory. How much the 32GB option adds to the price of the M6500 isn't yet made clear, though optioning 16GB costs $1,081; higher upgrades often cost disproportionately more.

At the same time, the 15.6-inch Precision M4500 is available with 16GB of RAM, though this adds a large $4,568, just about tripling the base model's price.
