Seagate GoFlex Home brings modular NAS for Macs, PCs

Seagate GoFlex Home uses external drives for NAS

Seagate dipped into the world of simple network-attached storage by launching the GoFlex Home. The drive potentially avoids the common problems with future upgrades by using its own GoFlex system for the storage: the NAS has a modular base that takes any single disk, desktop-sized GoFlex drive for a swap up in capacity without having to replace the drive or open a bay door. Trumping some drives, the Home has its own Wi-Fi and doesn't need to be plugged in solely through Ethernet.

Those who don't want to replace existing storage have access to a USB port that can take on one or more drives (with a hub) of its own. The same connector also makes printers available on the local network.

Seagate's drive is friendly to both Macs and Windows PCs, and includes proprietary backup software for both platforms. Mac users who would prefer to use Time Machine can treat the NAS as a network backup source. Every user can share content over the Internet through a closed loop by e-mailing a private link, and a paid Share Pro service gives mobile access on BlackBerry and iOS devices as well as pushing content to Facebook, Flickr and RSS feeds.

The GoFlex Home is available today and costs $160 for a 1TB version and $230 for a 2TB version.
