Magellan outs three new eXplorist GPS devices

Magellan this week outed three additions to its fairly new eXplorist handheld GPS series of devices for outdoor enthusiasts. The three new devices include the eXplorist 710, 610 and 510, with each capable of capturing geotagged photos or videos with a 3.2-megapixel camera, navigating to outdoor destinations anywhere in the world and recording audio messages through a microphone. All also share a 3-inch color touchscreen.

They are also IPX-7 certified for being waterproof in up to 3.3 feet of water for 30 minutes. The preloaded World Edition map contains the full road network for the US, Canada, Western Europe and Australia, and includes water features, urban and rural land use, and a realistic shaded relief background.

The 710 alone gets Magellan's Summit Series topographic map and its City Series turn-by-turn map for navigation in urban areas. It and the eXplorist 610 also have a three-axis electronic compass and a barometric altimeter for accurate orientation and elevation and allows for tracking weather patterns.

The devices will ship in the fall of this year, with the 510 priced at $350, the 610 at $450 and the 710 at $550. The units will ship with a standard mini USB cable and 2 lithium disposable AA batteries.

The first device in the eXplorist series was the GC introduced in March. All four are suitable for geocaching.
