HTC Desire reaches Telus with Sony LCD in place of AMOLED

updated 01:50 pm EDT, Thu July 15, 2010

HTC Desire gets official North American carrier

Telus on Thursday had the distinction of being the first major North American carrier to carry the HTC Desire, but with an important change. Its version has the same 1GHz processor and Android 2.1 of the international version but is one of the first known to use an LCD instead of AMOLED: it uses a 3.7-inch, 800x480 Sony Super LCD instead of the Samsung AMOLEDs that are in short supply. Later production runs of the Desire elsewhere are also likely to use an LCD but haven't been identified so far.

The phone also makes the leap to the North America-friendly 850MHz and 1,900MHz 3G bands and supports 802.11n Wi-Fi from the outset. An 8GB microSDHC card is packed in to handle the bulk of its storage. Telus hasn't made mention of any custom apps.

The carrier doesn't yet have a price or a ship date for its version of the Desire.
