Apple responses so far 'insufficient'
A Democratic senator from New York, Charles Schumer, has taken the unusual step of writing an open letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The company should explain the real reason the iPhone 4 is having reception problems, according to the senator. Apple's proposed solutions, such as a case or a different grip, are so far said to be "insufficient." Schumer in fact disputes an earlier claim that the issue is software-based, citing Consumer Reports' recent hardware test of the device.
Apple should make a "public commitment" to fix the reception problem for free, the senator adds. "I also encourage Apple to keep its promise to provide free software updates so that bars displayed accurately reflect signal strength," he goes on. "I further urge Apple to issue a written explanation of the formula it uses to calculate bar strength, so that consumers can once again trust the product that they have invested in.
"I look forward to Apple's swift action on this matter, and once again laud Apple for its innovative efforts and service to millions of Americans," the letter concludes.
Apple is set to talk about the iPhone 4 in an surprise press conference scheduled for Friday morning. While it has refused to provide any more details, the company is expected to address reception problems, and offer either free cases or a replacement program.

Schumer is irrelevant
Chuck should stick to what he knows. What exactly he knows isn't evident, but it certainly has nothing to do with iPhones or any other technology. This is just another example of his "know it all" grandstanding.
