Smaller iPads still a possibility in second-gen models?

updated 10:15 am EDT, Tue July 13, 2010

Industry sources claim 5.6- and 7-inch tablets

Second-generation iPads could include versions with 5.6- and 7-inch OLEDs, in addition to the 9.7-inch LCD format already available, sources with component makers claim. Orders are allegedly being taken for Q4 2010 and Q1 2011, with at least one company, Compal Electronics, handling the smaller sizes. The 9.7-inch tablets are expected to see "some minor changes," and Chimei Innolux could be added to the list of panel suppliers.

Rumors of smaller iPads predate the announcement of the first generation. The sources say, however, that Apple has different plans in mind for the new sizes. Whereas the current iPads have a broad multimedia focus, the 5.6- and 7-inch models are said to be aimed squarely at e-book reading. This could put them in more direct competition with readers like the Kindle, Nook and Kobo, which are all cheaper and lighter.

A factor that may cast doubts on the sources' claims is the link with OLEDs. The largest OLED maker, Samsung, has been unable to keep up with production for its own portable devices, and so is unlikely to be able to support an Apple launch in 2010. The sources add though that LG has also thrown a lot of resources behind OLED in recent times, helping to lower the cost of the technology to a point where it would not harm Apple's profit margin.
