HTC computer app lets Aria owners sideload non-Market apps

HTC Sync for PC lets Aria get third-party apps

HTC has released a new Sync desktop client that should allow users of the AT&T Aria to install third-party apps on non-rooted devices. The apps won't have to be downloaded using the handset from the Android Market, with an install as easy as a drag and drop when the Aria is connected to a computer over USB. The HTC Sync update is now available for download from HTC's support site.

Only Windows PCs are supported by the update, and is meant for users who do not have Microsoft Exchange Server to sync with but do have Contacts and Calendar events in Outlook or Outlook Express that they would like synced to their device.

AT&T normally bans Android apps from outside of the Android Market. It claims the limit is to guarantee security, although critics have argued that this helps it avoid competitive apps such as tethering or VoIP that it could otherwise more closely regulate on the network. [via Engadget]
