iPhone dev brings in $253K in one month from camera app

Camera+ performs well for developer

iPhone developer tap tap tap has allegedly fetched $253,000 in revenue from a single app sold for one month in the App Store. The app, Camera+, provides photography tools such as scene modes, cropping, digital zoom, and a Lightbox. Users can also apply a variety of effects, add borders, or share content with social networking sites.

Although the developer promoted the app with a prize package of high-end camera gear valued at $10,000, the sales were driven without any formal advertising. The title also showed strong performance in international markets, where sales were sustained despite a fall-off in US distribution numbers after the first two weeks.

The success of Camera+ is also somewhat unique considering its categorization as a productivity app. The app store top-sellers lists are dominated by games and entertainment titles in the US.

"If you’re an iPhone developer, this may be a big red flag if you’re creating productivity apps, utilities, and other non-game apps and you’re looking to develop the next big hit," co-founder John Casasanta wrote in a blog post. "But, as we’ve proven, it’s still possible to cut through and get a non-game up the ranks." [via Business Insider]

    Hmm..

Not exactly true, since the app was advertised unofficially on This Week in Tech, a podcast that has well over 200,000 listeners. And when one listener shows it off to another person, you get a domino effect.

That's a LOT of effective advertising right there.

    The power of Leo

Lisa Bettany pimped the app on Macbreak Weekly and Leo has the ear of tens of thousands of app buying listeners, including mine. When I checked out her website the fact that she is an attractive young woman was also influential. My limited use of the app was something of a disappointment but I have hopes that they will add functionality before it hits a paid upgrade.

    MacHeist!

Tap Tap Tap, by John's own admission, had a targeted mailing list of over 70,000 drawn from the overall membership of MacHeist that stands at around 600,000. This cannot be regarded as an "average" product launch. John, Phill and the guys are first rate designers but they are also ingenious marketeers! I wonder, also, about the promotional "prize". Is this permitted under AppStore rules? If so, this could open the door to Apps becoming raffle tickets!
