HTC explains Evo 4G's 30FPS limit as necessary for HDMI

updated 03:25 pm EDT, Wed July 7, 2010

HTC Evo 4G needs 30FPS for HD video sync

HTC at an event last night finally explained the Evo 4G's 30FPS graphics limit. A representative claimed that the frame rate cap exists to provide a smooth enough frame rate when the HDMI output is active. As the extra video needs a large part of the Snapdragon processor's power, an uncapped frame rate could bog down the phone.

The smartphone producer hasn't said if or when it would find a way to eliminate the 30FPS ceiling, but it could theoretically adjust performance depending on whether or not an HDMI cable was detected. Early looks at phones like the Motorola Droid X have suggested it doesn't have this limit despite have an HDMI output of its own, although it also has newer graphics that can handle higher resolutions.
