White iPhone 4 surfaces in the wild

updated 06:20 pm EDT, Wed July 7, 2010

Handset not expected to arrive until late July

At least one white iPhone 4 has surfaced in the wild, several weeks ahead of Apple's revised release schedule. The second color choice was omitted from early pre-orders, leaving customers to buy the black variant or wait a month to buy the white scheme. Unlike earlier iPhones, the latest model features a white panel on the facade as well as the rear panel.

The company recently admitted that the white components, shown in unboxing images posted on the Japanese site Impress, were "more challenging to manufacture than expected." Further details remain unknown, although the white and black glass panels are both produced from the same strengthened glass, likely to be Corning's Gorilla Glass or a similar material.

Apple still lists the white iPhone 4 as unavailable for pre-order. The company has yet to provide a specific launch date, but it is expected to ship sometime in the second half of July.

    Glad I waited.

    I've been waiting.

I want to see it in person first. My biggest concern is what it looks like when shut off. It would be VERY cool if the front was solid white like the back when shut off. White with a grey rectangle in the middle maybe not so much. Same goes for the black one, a grey rectangle in the middle detracts from its look and style when shut off. IMHO.

    Well ...

When the all-white iMac G3 came out (I saw it at the NYC MacWorld if I'm not mistaken), I thought it was the fugliest thing I had ever seen out of Apple. A few months later I owned one, and loved it.

So I'm hesitant to say I find the white iPhone ugly, but ... to my sensibilities it is a bit jarring. I think I'll stick to the black, but at least the white one is an intriguing variation.

    Waiting too...

White on brushed stainless is HOT!

And if you don't want the grey screen, you can just put a mirror screen protector on the front.

    Hmmm...

Looks a little strange, maybe because I'm so used to seeing the black front panel, even on previous white models. Perhaps the new screen is bright enough to compete with the white bezel, it'll be interesting to see it in the flesh. Right now I definitely prefer the black one.

    yuck

so ugly compared to the black. i can imagine how awful it will look with a white bumper around it so that the antenna will work right.

    Next phone will be...

After this fiasco and my terrible service with AT&T my next phone will be an android phone. Yes, the iPhone 4 is slick (played with it at the store), but once my 3GS contract ends next summer I am selling my iPhone and leaving the party.

I will stick with Apple for my computer needs, but I have fallen out of love with their phones.

    Interesting...

that there seems to be a proximity sensor with physical HOLES as compared to the black, being that I'm on my 2nd iP4 for the proximity sensor problem. Hummmm..
