Microsoft begins job cuts, hundreds displaced

updated 08:55 pm EDT, Wed July 7, 2010

Company culling its marketing teams

Corroborating earlier reports, Microsoft has allegedly begun cutting jobs in its Seattle facilities and global operations. Sources have told TechFlash that the company has removed hundreds of employees globally, with numbers in the low hundreds for the Seattle area.

People familiar with the situation also claim a majority of the displaced workers were involved in various marketing groups. Some of the individuals are expected to be offered a chance to rejoin the company as positions become available in other areas.

It is still unclear if the cuts were primarily aimed at the Windows Phone group, which is expected to be further transformed after the Kin failure and departures of J Allard and Robbie Bach.

The recent job cuts are said to be typical of Microsoft's strategy at the beginning of the fiscal year. The hundreds of job losses are also considered to be minimal compared to the realignment last year, which resulted in more than 5,800 layoffs.
