iPad builds now estimated at over 2 million per month

Most units expected to be 3G, not Wi-Fi

Apple's orders with Taiwanese manufacturers currently put iPad production at over 2 million units a month, according to a new research estimate. In particular, Apple is believed to have ordered between 2.3 and 2.35 million iPads for July alone. Production should, moreover, stay above that level for the foreseeable future, claims Digitimes Research.

An unusual aspect of the estimate is that in the July batch, roughly 58 to 60 percent of the iPads being assembled are expected to be 3G models, not Wi-Fi-only counterparts. The Wi-Fi option has been the most popular with the public so far, as it costs less both in terms of hardware and ongoing data fees. Apple has had a hard time fulfilling demand for 3G tablets, however, and so it may be attempting to compensate.

This looks to be an incredible year for the iPad..

When I saw the article it blew my mind by indicating that 15 million iPad units for the year could be a conservative figure. That would double my initial figure of 7 million for the entirety of 2010. As an Apple investor, I'd be more than satisfied if Apple could move 9 to 10 million iPads this year. It's almost unbelievable that there was that size of an untapped market sitting there waiting to be discovered by Apple. Unless the economy goes completely sour, Apple will have to reach $300 a share this year. Go, Apple!

Well, the real question is: how many of those sales are just to the Apple fanboy population who bought it because Apple made it, not because of some untapped market for tablets? As in, if MS had come out with the exact same tablet, with the same OS and everything (yeah, let's pretend now), how many of those iPad owners would have been swooping them up and how many would be saying "Oh, it's such a niche market!"
