T-Mobile seen rebirthing Sidekick based on Android

updated 08:30 am EDT, Fri July 2, 2010

Leak backs Android Sidekick talk

When T-Mobile resurrects the Sidekick line after its temporary exit today, its next devices should be based on Android, tipsters said today. The carrier's US division has reputedly been working on an Android-based Sidekick "for some time." More details didn't surface from the mocoNews tip, but it's presumed the same software team that handled the myTouch 3G Slide's custom UI would write for the Sidekick.

The replacement is potentially the HTC Vision. Although it would be a high-end phone with a dual-core processor running Android 3.0, it has been attached to Project Emerald, a development at T-Mobile believed to be the Sidekick successor.

Creating a from-scratch replacement of the Sidekick has been virtually necessary as Microsoft's takeover of Danger put an end to phones based on the original Sidekick platform. Microsoft instead forced a transition to Windows CE and produced the Kin, which in theory was to have provided a Sidekick equivalent to carriers like Verizon but was axed just over six weeks after it shipped.
