iPhone 4 beats Droid X, Evo 4G in camera phone showdown

updated 04:25 pm EDT, Fri June 25, 2010

iPhone photos tested more accurate than rivals

The iPhone 4's camera is not only better than those of its Android rivals but even some newer still cameras, testing today has discovered. It has just a five-megapixel sensor versus eight or more from the Droid X and Evo 4G, but its color accuracy and exposure were determined as better than all but those in dedicated cameras. Apple's edge was in choosing a large, back-illuminated CMOS sensor like that of the Sony WX1 included in the test, Macworld noted, as it not only gave better sensitivity in low light but avoided the tendency towards overcrowded sensors like on HTC's phones.

Sharpness and distortion were the iPhone 4's only weaknesses compared to cameras with similarly-sized lenses and sensors, as the Droid X was better in crispness even as it was worse in other areas.

Video was even more tilted in the iPhone's favor as it produced better video than all other cameras in the test except for the Flip Mino HD. Performance in dim conditions was again one of the most important factors, and the Flip's primary advantage is its audio recording, not video.

Apple's win isn't absolute, as it has yet to go up against the Nokia N8. The 12-megapixel handset has a much larger sensor than usual for a phone along with the matching lens and flash. As it may not ship until late August, though, Apple may have a relatively secure claim for the next few months.

    :re Yes

Just make sure to remember you hold your phone in the proper "Steve Jobs" approved position... (or spend more money to make it work the way it should...)

    (and the MacNN link)

But I am ready to be buried down because Apple can't do no wrong (I have been/currently an Apple user since the //e days..)

    Flash it, baby!!

Love the zoom, love the 2-sided shooter, but man...THANK HEAVENS FOR THE FLASH!!!!

It makes a world of difference now in using my iPhone for pictures. Before, I'd give it 50-50 on any shot not outside; definitely nothing in low lighting like restaurants, bars or cars at night. Now the flash makes all those settings possible. Plus it gives the option of Auto, On or Off....nice!

    Droid X's is better

The Droid X's 8mp still has the best quality and trumps all the other phones. The iPhone 4's pic is brighter, that doesn't mean better. We have many people that come in to buy TVs and they always think the one with the brightest picture is the best quality TV at first glance. All you have to do is lighten up settings and tada.

This is a joke. I can make an old camera from the early 90's have a pic as bright as the iPhone's, that doesn't make it the best quality. Droid X still has a better camera, better camera app, better operating system software, bigger screen, 10x the features, better talk life, everything.
