Asurion offers loss, damage insurance for iPhone 4, 3GS

updated 10:30 pm EDT, Wed June 23, 2010

Prices: $12 per month, with $100-$200 deductable

Asurion is offering insurance for iPhones, including the iPhone 4. Available in iPhone app form, Asurion's MobileProtect covers iPhone users who lose or damage their phone. The damage coverage includes water and other liquid damage. It also covers failure after the warranty has expired. Insured clients can get a replacement phone overnight in most locations. The most common claims are for lost or stolen phones.

Customers can enroll any time up to 30 days past the activation of the iPhone. Signing up works through the MobileProtect app, and claims work through the company's weblink which is available 24/7.

Costs of coverage are $12 per month, with a deductible of $100, $150 or $200, depending on the iPhone model.

Does it cover Apple employees in bars?

Very expensive. I had Apple replace an iPhone for $99 after it got wet. So why would anyone need this with that type of monthly fee and deductible.

Check with your auto/home insurer …

I've had my iPhone 3G (soon iPhone 4!) AND MacBook Pro covered 100% (no deductible as cost was negligible) for about $6/mo. through State Farm. Much more peace of mind when I'm out and about as I know it's covered should anything happen (TimeMachine backups are at home, and there's DropBox, so data's good, too). ^_^
