OCZ Onyx and Vertex 2 reach 1.8-inch size

OCZ finished its week with its first 1.8-inch solid-state drives. Together, the Onyx and Vertex 2 are built for upgrading ultraportables, netbooks and other computers that could use extra speed but won't fit a 2.5-inch SSD. Both attach through SATA or SATA II and often preserve the same performance as their earlier, bigger siblings.

With the Vertex 2, this includes the high-speed Sandforce memory controller and some of the best solid-state performance in the field with 285MB per second peak read speeds and 275MB per second writes. Onyx leans more towards netbooks and other budget systems with a less costly controller that reaches 135MB per second in reads and 70MB per second for writes. Either recognizes the TRIM command so that operating systems can keep them running at full potential for most of their useful lifespans.

As is customary for OCZ, the company hasn't outlined prices but is using capacity to guide the cost. The Onyx line includes just 32GB and 64GB versions, while the Vertex series starts at 60GB and scales up to 240GB.
