Canadian iPhone 4 delayed?

updated 12:10 pm EDT, Fri June 18, 2010

Apple now vague on shipping date

The iPhone 4 could miss its intended release date in Canada, a change at the Canadian Apple Store suggests. The device was previously scheduled to ship to the country in "July," already a delay past the US release date. The iPhone 3G and 3GS, which premiered in the US in July 2008 and June 2009, respectively, each launched simultaneously in Canada.

The Canadian iPhone 4 shipping date is now listed simply as "coming soon," hinting at an indefinite delay. Even if the phone is still on track to arrive in July, Apple may be reluctant to commit to a fixed timeframe. The company has already recorded over 600,000 pre-orders, globally, meaning that stock could be in short supply in the US, let alone the foreign markets Apple normally treats as secondary. The company generates most of its profits from American customers, and in fact delayed the international launch of the iPad as a consequence of high US demand.

It'll get here when it gets here; then everyone who wants it will get it.

I never saw the July date in the store.

I only ever saw "Coming Soon".

The keynote listed July, but can anybody confirm that they did see the store say July?

what is the point of this article?

Japan started outselling Canada for iPhones, so we got bumped to 2nd release.

The Canadian Apple Store has not listed a date yet for the iPhone 4, and won't until the pre-order date is set/reached based on past performances, rather than speculation like this story.
(Like with the recent iPad launch in Canada, which was delayed once, but the date was not put on the Apple Store until the pre-order day)

It is very possible that initial orders in the first round of 5 countries could be so high that production can't keep up and cause international delays. But until some kind of formal announcement is made, it is just speculation.

I find it a bit offensive the way the article says Apple "generates most of its profits from American customers ..." as if that makes them more important. It's really a chicken and egg situation in that if they don't start treating the International customers with a bit more respect, then they won't actually grow their market anyway. It's also true that right now, Apple is opening retail locations and iTunes stores around the world and desperately trying to expand it's market Internationally.

If they really want to dominate the market they will have to get their act together with regards International shipments. If they find some way to actually supply the International market with the product it would soon eclipse the US market anyway. By focussing only on the US market they are shooting the future Apple in the foot.

could this be about the unlocking

Supposedly Canada will be selling unlocked phones. Makes me wonder if Apple wants as many US buyers covered as possible before someone could go across the border, get a factory unlocked phone, bring it home and pop in a T-Mobile Sim (even with it just being edge)
