Mobile app downloads seen declining by 2013

updated 02:25 pm EDT, Thu June 17, 2010

Research shows mobile app stores near height

Mobile app stores could peak in as little as two years, ABI Research warned today. It expects the download rate to peak by 2012 or 2013 and to slowly decline from then onwards. Downloads could still be popular with 1.2 billion apps downloaded in 2015, but the decline would be quick enough that companies may not want to depend heavily on apps in the long term.

Analysts didn't directly explain why they anticipated a drop, but oversaturation was considered a genuine problem. At 225,000 apps currently in the iOS App Store and 50,000 apps on Android Market, titles designed to promote a company or otherwise drive traffic already risk being drowned out by many others.

The prediction is an early one and could change significantly in the future. However, peak popularity could have a significant impact on mobile apps as customers may either turn more to the web or to features already built into smartphone-class devices.

    Over saturation for sure!

It's been a big push to see the quantity of apps on each app store. Unfortunately, nothing is being said about the quality of said apps. Unfortunately, many of the apps are simply useless, or simply a web page disguised as an app.

If it's just a web page, I don't need to download an app to do it.

    Mobile Apps Will Decline...

My guess is that they think the "cloud" will swallow up our software. But its hard to imagine wireless networks getting fast enough to handle our mobile software needs that quickly.

    Waiting for storage...

Only reason i don't have more apps is that i'm waiting for the increased storage the iPhone 4 base model will offer, from 8 gig of my current iPhone 3G, to 16 gig for the iPhone 4. Also, faster performance is a big factor in me waiting.
