Nintendo may use 3D for Wii sequel

Nintendo to bring 3D to Wii successor?

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said in an interview with Japanese daily Nikkei that the Wii successor may have 3D capabilities, like its recently shown 3DS console. Iwata says the company is watching the adoption rate of 3D TVs, saying that they will wait until about 30 percent of households have a 3D TV.

The current console does not offer HD graphics, like its competitors, but despite this relative shortcoming is selling in much higher numbers. Now that both Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's PlayStation Move have introduced motion-based controllers that the Wii pioneered, Nintendo may see this as the time to offer 3D and HDTV support for its home console.

Sony also plans to bring 3D gaming to its existing PS3 consoles as early as this summer. Microsoft has similar plans through a tie-in with LG but this is farther into the future. [via Kotaku]
